‘The Autumn Effect’ – The colours of beauty in death?

Being that I am currently living in Bangkok, a place with little in the way of natural greenery, and certainly none in the autumnal transition which this week’s Travel Theme: Foliage describes, I had to backlog for something here.

This shallow pit covered in decaying foliage is from some odd form of sunken grave located in the Boot Hill Cemetery of Seney, Michigan. Sitting next to a modern, comparably regular cemetery, these dozen or so graves are often in sunken ground and grown out with trees.

Whatever the purpose or method of making these sunken graves was, but I have never come across something exactly like this in any other locale.
