Since I’ll be returning there soon and this weekend is the celebration of Loi Krathong in Thailand, I figured an image from my expedition to the ruins of Sukhothai would be appropriate. The holiday, according to mostly-disproved popular legend, is said to have began at the moated temple in the centre of the Old City of Sukhothai.

The temple of this photo, Wat Si Chum, is one of the best-known and most photographed in Sukhothai.  However, I was lucky enough to happen upon 2 mae ji, a kind of Thaii Buddhist nun, who were devoutly using the ruined temple for its original purpose rather than the tourism that I and most others were there for.
