Another highlight of my recent time in Ayutthaya, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is the largest intact structure from the original city. The wat (Buddhist temple) served as a private chapel for the ruling family of the Siam nation.

These three, very large, exceptionally curved stupas served as the centerpiece monuments of the temple.  Each one was built to contain he ashes of a member of the royal family.  They are connected by raised brick platforms accessible by a small stairway.  The platforms each held smaller buildings which have since crumbled away.

The interiors of these stupas were accessible through carved, and occasionally graffitied, multi-tiered entrances.  And while the majority of interior stupas and prangs in Ayutthaya were home to nests of lots of bats, the inside of these stupas only house a pungent odor of urine.

Hi all, my name is Ben. I’m a native Michigander with a passion for human culture and new places, and more than that, new experiences. I have degrees in archaeology and writing, pursuing a career in the latter. However, I never quite lost that fascination for archaeological theory. For the past 11 years, I’ve been living and travelling between Asia, Europe, and North America, documenting ancient sites and the peoples who built them, and then adapting them into practical archaeological travel information at PathsUnwritten.com. https://pathsunwritten.com/about-me/
