So there’s a city full of ancient ruins very close to where I live. But, instead of taking the 45 minutes it should, it has taken me over a year and a half to get there. I kept putting it off to see things further away, thinking it was always a close convenience. But I recently and finally got around to going there on a weekend expedition.
In Ayutthaya, I was expecting something very similar to Sukhothai, another historic Thailand capital lost to time. And while there were some magnificent structures throughout the city, it didn’t have the same appeal. The modern town is built all around the destroyed ruins of the old city, which seems to take away some of the charm of the place.
Unfortunately I had thought myself more healed than I was from being hit by a car a couple weeks before. After a while my leg and back were becoming noticeably exhausted. Combined with the persistently hot sun all throughout my full day of exploring, I was thoroughly spent by mid afternoon.
The actual highlight of the trip was flowing down the river around the Island that is Ayutthaya. Laying at the convergence of the Chao Phraya, Lopburi, and Pa Sak Rivers, this trip takes you around various riverfront temples as the sun is setting, concluding in a great photo opportunity like this.
